Simmons Cancer Institute Summer Internship - Application deadline March 7, 2022

Applications for the 2022 summer lab internships at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine are being accepted through March 7. Four positions will be awarded on a competitive basis to qualified undergraduate college students who plan a career in medicine or research with a focus on cancer. Established in 2009, the paid internship program provides hands-on experience for college undergraduates. Sept. 11, 2017 – Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University Medicine will host the 17 th annual Denim & Diamonds fundraiser Saturday, October 14, at the Crowne Plaza Springfield. Simmons Cancer Institute to host ‘financial toxicity’ presentation on Thursday, Sept. 12

SPRINGFIELD, IL - Nausea, hair loss, fatigue, appetite loss, pain. This list of common cancer treatment side effects doesn’t include “financial toxicity,” but maybe it should, according to organizations like American Cancer Society, AARP and The American Journal of Medicine. Financial toxicity, or the cost of cancer treatment, is often a major burden to cancer survivors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer care in the U.S. cost $157 billion in 2010. By 2020, the figure is estimated to reach more than $174 billion. Simmons Cancer Institute to Host HPV Roundtable for Parents

Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU Medicine will host “The ABC’s of HPV” at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 21. The roundtable discussion will provide parents and guardians with an opportunity to discuss human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations with medical professionals from Southern Illinois University Medicine. Simmons Cancer Institute to Provide Free Oral Cancer Screenings

SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS – Head and neck cancer can be a devastating diagnosis, but if found at an early stage, there is an 80 percent survival rate, according to the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance. Simmons Cancer Institute's 9th Annual Butterfly Release Set for June 17

Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine will hold its 9th Annual Butterfly Release at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 17, in the Thomas Garden of Hope, Simmons Cancer Institute, 315 W. Simon leads efforts for better behavioral health in Boston

SIU School of Medicine alumnus Dr. Kevin Simon (’15) was named Boston's first chief behavioral health officer in June 2022. Mayor Michelle Wu appointed Simon to the newly created post and tasked him with developing and implementing a comprehensive behavioral health agenda for the city's most vulnerable.

SIU Alliance for Women in Medicine and Science Executive Leadership Program

The Alliance for Women in Medicine and Science (AWIMS) will launch a longitudinal executive leadership program for mid to late-career (10 years or more of practice in your area and/or at the associate or full professor level) women faculty at SIU School of Medicine in April 2022. Briefly, the program will consist of monthly virtual sessions on topics such as negotiation, power, management challenges in academic medicine, and strategic career planning.
