Senior medical students in the graduating Class of 2017 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine received results from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) on Friday, March 17, at the same time other U.S. medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs. Sixty-two SIU seniors have secured residency positions. Eleven students (18%) will begin residency training in internal medicine. Auburn native Rachel Schmalsof received the J.S. Templeton, MD, Memorial Scholarship. Schmalsof is the daughter of Karen Schmidt of Auburn and the late Brent Schmalshof. She is a 2011 graduate of Auburn High School and a 2015 graduate of Elmhurst College. The Templeton Scholarship was established in 1993 by Harriss Malan of Carbondale and Jane Templeton Minton of DuQuoin, in memory of their uncle and father, Dr. James Scott Templeton. Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. The event is dedicated to Dr. Junaia P. Carter. Carter was a member of the Class of 2010, who died in November 2010 after a battle with breast cancer.
