New study looks at use of Riluzole to slow Alzheimer's progression

Riluzole is an FDA-approved drug, currently used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS; Lou Gehrig's disease) and is currently in a Phase II clinical trial for the treatment of mild Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (Clinical Trial #NCT01703117). The exact reason behind riluzole’s potential benefits on cognition in AD patients is unknown. One potential way may be through altering glutamate signaling in the brain, a neurotransmitter essential for learning and memory. New study shows toll of firearm injury on U.S. children

Since 2020, firearm injuries have become the No. 1 cause of death in American children, according to the CDC. SIU Medicine's Dr. Ruchika Goel and colleagues at Johns Hopkins University studied national data to learn more about the children and adolescents affected, as well as the burden on hospitals and health care providers.

New study supports hormone replacement therapy in early menopause

A recent study published in JAMA finds that the benefits of hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms outweigh the risks for most women under age 60. It's good news for women who suffer from hot flashes, insomnia and other related problems.

New treatment offers outpatient option for enlarged prostate

A new medical procedure is now available in central Illinois for treating a common male malady. Water vapor therapy can be done in an outpatient setting to treat Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate. BPH is present in the majority of men over age 40, and more than 90 percent of men over age 80, according to the National Institutes of Health. It affects the frequency and ease of urination.
