Springfield Family Medicine Residency program welcomes 2023 chief residents

The SIU Family Medicine Residency Program in Springfield announced Karie Schwertman and Ashay Vaidya as their chief residents for the 2023-2024 academic year. Chief residents are selected by their co-residents and considered leaders of the group. The term they will serve is one year during their final year as residents. They are considered the point of contact for insight into the program and education and the liaison between the residents and the program director. Medical Insurance Springfield medical students are assessed two fees for healthcare: Primary Care Fee – covering basic primary care visits, and basic laboratory studies and simple x-rays ordered by primary care physician. Student Medical Extended Care Fee - Providing the SIU Student Health Insurance Plan that covers expenses such as emergency rooms, hospitalization, surgery, ambulance, specialty care, and advanced laboratory studies and imaging. Springfield physician to share Mars mission insights

Think you have what it takes to live on Mars? Springfield emergency medicine physician Dr. Nathan Jones thought he did. And now he knows for certain. Late one night in 2023, Jones clicked a link on his computer and "went down a rabbit hole" that led to a year-long simulation experiment with NASA. Springfield teens complete SIU physician prep program

Fourteen Springfield-area high school students are better prepared to become physicians after graduating from the Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program (P 4 ), a four-year program sponsored by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield Public Schools and the Sangamon County Medical Society. The P 4 graduation was held in the South Auditorium at SIU’s main instructional building, 801 N. Rutledge St. on February 13.
