Trainee Research Symposium--Guidelines and Directions

Eligibility:  Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows are invited to submit research abstracts for presentation (oral or poster) at the Symposium.  Participants must be first author, and the work must have been conducted under the guidance of an SIU faculty member.  Only one abstract submission AS FIRST AUTHOR is allowed per trainee.  The faculty mentor must approve the submitted abstract, including authorship. 

Symposium Format:  Presentation formats for the symposium will be an oral presentation or a poster.  A subcommittee of faculty will review each abstract prior assigning an oral or a poster presentation to the trainee. 

  • Oral Presentations will be limited to 15 minutes max (10 for presentation; 5 for questions). 
  • Posters must not exceed 4'x6' (landscape orientation) and should include the following sections:  title; name of participant(s); purpose of study; methods and materials used; results; conclusions; significance of results and relevance to the broader fields of knowledge; and references.

Graduate students will compete for prizes in both poster and oral presentation categories.  Students will be evaluated based on the quality of the study, the potential scientific or medical significance of the project, the quality of the abstract, poster or oral presentation, and the ability to answer questions about the project.   

Submission Requirements:

Cover Page: Please complete the cover page and provide it with the abstract. 

Abstracts: The abstract is limited to one page. Provide a succinct title, list all authors and their department affiliations.  Structure body to include Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions sections.  Abstracts must be submitted in MS Word, 1” margins all around, Arial 11 font, with single spacing.

Email (using your siumed.edu email address only) the cover page and abstract by 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2020 to Kristi Katcher (kkatcher@siumed.edu), Office of the Associate Dean for Research.
