Research is an important aspect of residency training. The ability to develop a focused research question, review past literature on the subject, structure a protocol for data collection, and evaluate the results of a study, are skills that help advance one's understanding of their field. Quality improvement is a practical application of the research method used to improve patient care and outcomes. Involvement in quality improvement projects is not only required for continued board certification, but is also an important aspect of emergency department operations and administration. Here at
