Liability Insurance and Legal Requests The employing hospitals provide professional liability insurance for residents and fellows during their training. The policies are a minimum $1,000,000 per occurrence and cover any professional acts performed within the scope of training, whether filed during or after completion of training. If they need information about their coverage or need to request malpractice / claims verification, they contact the Risk Management office of their employing hospital, with the exception of Springfield based residents/fellows (see below). AWAY ROTATIONS Away rotations at SIU School of Medicine are a time limited experience that must meet unique educational goals which are not available at the local sites established by the training program. A program’s training sites are approved by the employing hospitals as an integral and recurring component of the program to meet accreditation requirements, and an agreement or contract has been established outlining the terms of this affiliation. Springfield Orientation Orientation of new residents and fellows to the Springfield site occurs June 25 of each year (unless it falls on a weekend, then will be held the preceding Friday). It is a joint effort between SIU Medicine, Springfield Memorial Hospital and HSHS St. John’s Hospital. Preparation for orientation begins in March. Orientation is required for all new residents and fellows regardless of training level. Procedure for Completion of Initial Agreement with Physicians The initial employment contract will cover a resident/fellow over the course of their entire residency or fellowship training. SIU obtains electronic signatures through DocuSign for all resident/fellow initial agreements. The contract template, completion directions and routing instructions will be sent electronically to all programs at the appropriate time.
