SIU Cardiothoracic Surgery has a strong research program that has resulted in greater than 200 publications and presentations. The results from our research efforts influence the care of patients with diseases of the chest. Some of the major areas of research interest of our faculty include lung cancer, valvular heart disease, esophageal disorders, and surgical treatment for emphysema. While involved in research in all of these areas Dr. Hazelrigg is well known for major contributions in the examination and application of minimally invasive chest surgeries. Like all surgeries, lung cancer surgery is most successful when performed by a specialist with a great deal of experience in the particular procedure. SIU School of Medicine’s TOPS lung surgeons are among the most skilled in the state. They perform a large number of surgeries for lung cancer each year, using the least invasive and most effective techniques Lung cancer may be treated with surgery alone or combined with other treatments. Chemotherapy or radiation may be given before surgery to shrink tumors. This is called induction or neoadjuvant therapy. Chemotherapy and or radiation therapy

Research conducted by the Division of Vascular Surgery is done in conjunction with the SIU Center for Clinical Research . We participate in major clinical trials and participate in the Society for Vascular Surgery Quality Initiative (VQI). Our residents have presented at local, regional and national meetings, including posters and podium presentations. During the residency program, each resident must complete at least one primary clinical or basic science research project. Prior to the completion of their final academic year, a completed manuscript must be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal

Background: The Community Health Needs Assessment identified pediatric asthma as a problem disproportionally impacting children on the East side of Springfield. A community based approach using community health workers and home visits was developed to reduce Emergency Room visits due to uncontrolled asthma.
