2018 Department of Pharmacology Memorial Award Recipients

Dr. Satu Somani was one of the original faculty members of the SIU-SOM Department of Pharmacology and a dedicated scientist educator. He loved teaching, often asking for more time to teach additional material he felt important to the student’s medical education. Dr. Somani passed suddenly in 2002. To honor Dr. Somani’s memory, a fund was setup by Mrs. Somani to enable the Department of Pharmacology to annually award an outstanding student of Medical Pharmacology a monetary stipend. 2021 Graduate Student Research Symposium

Three graduate students from the Department of Pharmacology won awards at the 31st Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium held on April 23, 2021. Jesse Britz from Dr. Tischkau’s lab won 1st place for his oral presentation. Caleigh Findley from Dr. Erin Hascup’s lab and Madan Ghimire from Dr. Caspary’s lab won 3rd place for their oral presentations. The title of the presentations were: Jesse Britz - Sex-Dependent Impact of Chronic Circadian Disruption on SCN Neuropeptide Expression Caleigh Findley - Abnormal Glutamatergic Neurotransmission and Cognitive Impairment in Male AppNL-F/NL-F Mice

SIU SOM Outstanding Scholar

The SIU SOM Oustanding Scholar award was presented to Laurent Brard, MD, PhD, a professor in the Department of OB/GYN. Dr. Brard is currently the PI on an NIH/NCI grant addressing rural cancer health disparities, a partnership grant with Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University in St. Louis. In addition, he has more than 80 publications in peer reviewed journals; almost half of those since joining SIU in 2010.
