Advances in Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is painful, leads to a high incidence of stroke and carries with it a much shorter life expectancy than the average person living in the developed world. Andrew Wilber, PhD, associate professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology at SIU School of Medicine, and his team are working to change that.

Congratulations to award recipients Nnenna Ezeilo, M.D., a fourth-year resident in Otolaryngology working in the lab of Dr. Brandon Cox (Pharmacology) and Sri Kommajosyula, Ph.D., a first-year postdoc working in the lab of Dr. Donald Caspary (Pharmacology). The two trainees were awarded a travel grant to attend the Association for Research in Otolaryngology annual meeting held February 9-14 in San Diego, Calif. Simmons Cancer Institute Now Accepting Summer Internship Applications

Applications for the 2018 summer lab internships at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University Medicine are now being accepted through March 15. The cancer institute will award four positions to qualified undergraduate college students who plan a career in medicine or biomedical research with a focus on cancer. The paid summer internship provides hands-on experience for college undergraduates and are awarded on a competitive basis. Amber Fifer named Associate Director of CCR

Dr. Amber Fifer has been appointed associate director of the Center for Clinical Research. Amber joined the school in 2014 as a research assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and has served as their director of clinical research. Amber earned her doctor of pharmacy degree at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1997. In addition to her involvement on multiple CCR teams, Amber has been an Institutional Review Board (IRB) member at SIU since 2009 and was recently appointed to the SIU Conflict of Interest Committee. Before joining SIU, Amber worked at St. John's Hospital for 12 years
