Dr. Andrzej Bartke, Director of SIU's Aging & Longevity Research Laboratory, has won several major research awards, including the Methuselah award for generating the world's oldest mouse. When he isn't lecturing around the world, he and his team of laboratory scientists work to gather research on the effects of growth hormones and caloric restriction on aging.

We are working on the genetic control of aging in mammals and on endocrine mechanisms responsible for the effects of longevity genes. We reported the first evidence that mutation of a single gene can significantly extend life span in a mammal (Brown-Borg et al. Nature 384:33, 1996). We have extensively characterized the phenotype of long-lived Ames dwarf (Prop1df) mice and identified several mechanisms that are likely to explain or contribute to delayed aging and greatly prolonged longevity of these animals.
