How to Apply

Applicants may apply to both General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Track upon graduation from medical school. If the applicant only wants to be considered for the 5-year “CAP Track”, they have the option of just applying to CAP Track through the NRMP match as well. If matched to the CAP Track, the applicant is committing to stay for 5 years at SIU School of Medicine to complete requirements for general psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry. Strong interest in child psychiatry should be indicated in the personal statement. Although not required, having at least one letter of recommendation from a Child and Adolescent psychiatrist is helpful. Passing scores on USMLE steps 1 and II are required.

Traditional fellowship application (“fast tracking” after PGY 3 year in psychiatry): For an applicant to be considered for interview, completion of the third or fourth year of general psychiatry training is required. Individuals who are applying while still in their general residency training must provide documentation of satisfactory performance in their training program. Individuals who have completed their general psychiatry training must furnish evidence of successfully completing their training along with evidence of acceptable clinical practice in any interval between the completion of general psychiatry and their application for a child and adolescent psychiatry training slot. All applicants must have passed USMLE Steps I, II, and III to be eligible for admission, and must also have a permanent Illinois medical license by the beginning of training.

All potential residents follow the same format for applications.
