Davie named chair of Biomedical Sciences

Dr. Judy Davie has been named the chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences in Carbondale. She joined the SIU School of Medicine faculty in 2006, and has served as assistant and associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Day of Giving is a success for MEDPREP

Dealing with Sexual Harassment in the Clinic

A patient says something flirtatious to a physician during a clinical encounter that makes the doctor uncomfortable. It may be inappropriate, but is it sexual harassment? SIU faculty and staff debated this scenario and others that dealt with the hot-button topic during a panel on Jan. 30 in the South Auditorium. Decatur Residents participate in DPS Extended Day Program - 2022

The Family Medicine Residency Decatur residents participated in the Decatur Public School Extended day Program with students from Decatur School District schools. The DPS program is a before and after-school program created to bridge the childcare gap for DPS families and support the District’s focus on providing intentional academic opportunities beyond the school day. DPS collaborated with DEA, Decatur Education Association and DFTA, Decatur Federation of Teaching Assistants to develop a program that supports district students and provides a childcare option for working families. Decatur School Students to Benefit from 'Healthy Communities' Grant

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has received a $42,000 grant for a planning project to improve the health and wellness of students in Decatur public schools. Decatur Public School District #61 is funding the grant, received from the Illinois State Board of Education through a partnership with the Illinois Education Association. “Education and health go hand-in-hand,” said Sameer Vohra, MD, JD, who is leading the team project. “Studies show that healthier children will get better grades and have reduced absences.” Vohra, a pediatrician, is executive director of SIU School of

December 2019 Patient Experience Highlight

SIU Medicine’s December 2019 patient experience highlight recognizes Sandra Ettema, MD, Department of Otolaryngology. Informing patients and their families of a terminal illness is not something that most of us would think about daily. For our providers, that is a different story. Dr. Ettema received a card in the mail last month from a patient’s family. In the card was a letter describing the meaning of this patient to the family but most impressively, the gratitude and appreciation shown to Dr. Ettema for her kindness in the delivery of the news and explanation of the diagnosis of cancer
