SIU Fertility & IVF Center Invites Families to 8th Birthday Party

The Fertility and IVF Center at Southern Illinois University Medicine will hold its 8 th annual birthday party 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16, at Erin’s Pavilion in Southwind Park, 4965 S. Second St. in Springfield. “This event is an extremely rewarding experience to see these children and know that our team played a role in helping their families,” said SIU Fertility & IVF Center Director Ricardo Loret de Mola, MD. ”It’s our way of celebrating the parents and children we’ve helped.” In 2017, the center hosted more than 250 parents and children, ranging from newborns to eight year olds. Annual Birthday Celebration Set for September 13 Lexi Kotner is only 5, but she’s already an avid ice skater, gymnast and dancer. Kody Kotner, like his big sister, is active, joining his first soccer league at age 3. But seven years ago, their mom Jeannie underwent six failed inseminations and two failed in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles and believed she might never become a parent. “We were very frustrated and losing hope,” Jeannie said. SIU Forum to Discuss Racial Inequalities, Impacts on Health Care

Understanding the effects of racism and other inequities within the health care system is the focus of a lecture and forum on February 9 and 10 in Springfield. Dr. Joia Adele Crear-Perry, founder and president of the National Birth Equity Collaborative, will present the keynote address, “A New Legacy: Trust, Truth and Anti-racism in Medicine” via WebEx. SIU General Surgery residency names Melanie Barnard as program director

Melanie Barnard, MD, assistant professor for General Surgery, has been named program director for the SIU General Surgery residency. Barnard is a graduate of the program, with a successful practice that focuses on the care of breast diseases. She has demonstrated a commitment to surgical education, having been instrumental in updating the General Surgery residency curriculum. She took a lead role in developing mock oral examinations involving both the use of simulation and researching new simulation tools. SIU GME Quality Improvement Poster Competition

The SIU Graduate Medical Education Committee recently presented the 4th Annual SIU SOM Quality Improvement Poster Symposium and Competition. The event showcases residents’ and fellows’ quality improvement projects. Originally scheduled for April 8, the 2019-20 SIU QI: Poster Symposium and Competition was held online this year. Monetary awards were given to the top three Quality Improvement projects: First place = $250 Second place = $150 Third place = $100 Submitted projects had to show initiative and commitment to improving systems and processes that directly and indirectly improve patient

SIU Graduate Students Inspire Future Scientists at Brain Awareness Day

When it comes to anatomy, everyone has a favorite part. Each year, graduate students from the SIU School of Medicine’s Neuroscience and Pharmacology concentration show some love to their top choice during Brain Awareness Week . Brain Awareness Week aims to increase public understanding of brain research. As part of this mission, the group coordinates a fun Brain Awareness Day for 8th graders at Franklin Middle School . SIU HealthCare CMO Named Chair of National Education Bureau

Harald Lausen, DO, MA, the chief medical officer of SIU HealthCare and assistant dean for clinical education at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, has been appointed chair of the Bureau of Osteopathic Education for the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Education studies the full continuum of osteopathic medical education and makes recommendations to the AOA board on ways to improve osteopathic medical education and policies that support educational accreditation and certification programs.
