Kenniebrew events on February 8-9 to encourage health equity

Each February, SIU hosts a series of events to honor Dr. Alonzo Kenniebrew, the first Black physician in the United States to build and operate a private surgical hospital. This year, one of the gatherings is being renamed to honor the late Dr. Wesley Robinson-McNeese.

Sunny Nakae, PhD, offered lessons in empowerment and building skills to “become an ally” at the 2022 Dr. Alonzo Kenniebrew Lecture on February 8. Nakae is senior associate dean for equity, inclusion, diversity and partnership at California University of Science and Medicine. Her virtual talk focused on the importance of allies in combating and correcting injustice and mistreatment in the workplace, institutions and the public sphere. Our laboratory takes a geroscience approach to understanding biological processes that contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. The long-term goals of our laboratory are to: identify nonpharmacological interventions that target insulin and glutamate signaling pathways that prevent or alleviate cognitive decline and elucidate their mechanisms of action in order to identify pharmacological targets for treating Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Kim J Hodgson, MD, Named President-Elect of the Society for Vascular Surgery

Kim J. Hodgson, MD, chair of the division of vascular surgery at Southern Illinois University Medicine in Springfield, was elected president-elect of the Society for Vascular Surgery for 2018-19 at the organization’s Vascular Annual Meeting in June. He will be slated for president next year. “I am looking forward to a busy year as the Society continues to expand its scope and mission,” Hodgson said. “The world of medicine is changing and we must absolutely grow and change to meet new challenges.
