SIU Institute for Plastic Surgery Patient to Take Center Stage at New York Fashion Week

Breast cancer survivor and SIU Institute for Plastic Surgery patient Susan Danenberger will have the opportunity to show what life can look like after breast cancer while at New York Fashion Week. Danenberger, owner of Danenberger Family Vineyards in New Berlin, will walk the runway for AnaOno Intimates, a designer who specializes in apparel for breast cancer patients and survivors. Danenberger is one of 24 models, all of whom are living with or in remission from stage IV, metastatic breast cancer. SIU labs can bring the THUNDER with new 3D imaging microscope

A new microscope at SIU School of Medicine can quickly make the invisible visible. The THUNDER Imager TM , a highly advanced technology now in use at SIU’s Core Research Facilities, lets scientists capture vivid 3D images of cells, tissues and organs in seconds. The new capability opens the door to faster medical discoveries and groundbreaking visuals. Scientists say the THUNDER Imager TM could accelerate progress in areas like cancer, hearing loss and Alzheimer’s disease by helping scientists understand the body at the molecular level. SIU Med School Elects New Alumni Board Members

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has named five new board members to the school’s Alumni Society Board of Governors. The new board members include: Milton Armstrong, MD, FACS; Richard Austin, MD; Careyana Brenham, MD; Kelli Webb, MD; and Tabatha Wells, MD. The new board members’ three-year term will begin at the April board meeting. Armstrong, a member of the class of 1982, is the division chief in the Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Hand Surgery and serves as the plastic surgery residency program at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. SIU Med School Is Exclusive Site for Bladder Cancer Clinical Trial

Combined Drug Therapies May Prevent Need for Surgery A new clinical trial for bladder cancer has opened exclusively at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. The trial will combine the current use of drug therapy placed inside the bladder with a new, intravenous drug that increases the response of the immune system. The study will determine if the combination of the two drugs is safe and potentially be more effective at eliminating the cancer cells.
