Grant Expands Children’s Health Care Efforts in Southern Illinois

Grants help Sangamon County improve services for individuals with mental illness, substance use disorders

As a result of reduced state and federal funding, jails and prisons have become de facto mental health facilities at both local and national levels. Staff members at these institutions are sometimes unable to manage this population’s specific needs. With help from SIU School of Medicine staff, Sangamon County Court Services received two grants to develop services provided to persons with mental illness (MI) or co-occurring substance abuse (CMISA) who are arrested and jailed for minor offenses. Grants to help Sangamon County divert people from jail

The Sangamon County Jail’s inmate population has exceeded its 285-beds capacity every year since 2002. For the past 16 years, the jail’s population has averaged 336, due in part to a significant increase in the proportion of court-involved individuals with mental illness (MI) or co-occurring substance abuse (CMISA). Sangamon County’s legal system does its best to handle the growing numbers of the mentally ill population.
