Fund established in McFadden’s honor to further dementia research

Sam McFadden’s curiosity and passion for studying neurodegenerative diseases will live on through the recently established Samuel A. McFadden Aging and Neurodegenerative Disease Research Fund. McFadden, the lab manager for the Smith Alzheimer’s Center Hascup Labs at SIU Medicine, has been battling a brain tumor for nearly a decade. In June 2023, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a fast-growing and aggressive brain tumor that currently does not have a cure. Gastroenterology adds Fellowship program

The SIU Division of Gastroenterology has obtained ACGME accreditation for a new Fellowship program. The achievement has been reached after decades of development. A fellowship is advanced training a physician can pursue following his/her residency. Individuals receive the opportunity to spend 2-3 years studying a specific branch of medicine in depth. These additional years of education allow them to specialize and become an expert in a particular field. Abdul Swied, MD, will serve as program director for the new fellowship. General Surgery Residents Take Top Award at National Competition

The SIU Medicine General Surgery Residency Program is the 2017 American College of Surgeons' Surgical Jeopardy Competition champions. Chief Resident Susan Wetzel, MD, and second-year resident Sarah Fedeli, MD, led the team to victory on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at the Annual American College of Surgeons meeting in San Diego.
