Leading to excellence: Dobbins & McDowell to direct professional development

Learners recognize surgical educators with 2021 teaching awards

Medical students and residents have determined the recipients of the 2021 Department of Surgery Teaching Awards. Nick Tadros, MD, MCR, was named the "Outstanding Educator of the Year." Emily Serafin, MD, was the recipient of the "Community Faculty Teacher of the Year" award. Samuel Grampsas, MD, and Melanie Barnard, MD, received the "Faculty Teacher of the Year for Resident Teaching" awards. Norman Otsuka, MD, and Gordon Allan, MD, received the "Faculty Teacher of the Year for Medical Student Teaching" awards. Philipos Gebremedhin, MD, received the "Resident Teacher of the Year" award.

Learning the language of trust

Julio Barrenzuela is adept at overcoming cultural barriers. Now, in the midst of a pandemic, he holds hope that an SIU outreach program can improve the health of Springfield’s Latino and undocumented populations. In spring 2020, Barrenzuela joined SIU’s newly formed Illinois Virtual Care Program as a pandemic health worker (PHW), hired to build bridges between Springfield’s Spanish-speaking communities and its medical community. Through Smith Alzheimer's Center outreach programs, participants have found camaraderie, compassion It didn’t take Chris Burns long to realize he found something special. Looking for more resources to help with caregiving, Chris searched high and low around Springfield. He took a caregiver class that helped provide some information, but that only made him hungrier for more knowledge.
