Anatomy and Neurobiology

Department faculty are actively engaged in laboratory and theoretical research, in the areas of cell biology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and evolutionary genetics. The department's research efforts are supported by a fully-equipped and staffed histology processing laboratory and campus image analysis center. The department provides senior students the opportunity to do an elective in advanced dissections in neuro and gross anatomy.

Problem-Based Learning Resources

As a resource to other medical education institutions, we offer our Problem-Based Learning resources for purchase. This includes books as well as electronic Problem-Based Learning modules where students can use free inquiry to interview and examine patients. These electronic modules can be used as simulated patients.

Trauma Based Behavioral Health Fellowship

This is a didactic and experiential clinical platform that focuses on Trauma-Informed Practices, building integrated Trauma-Informed Systems of Care, learning assessment measures for clients who may have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), designing evidence-based treatment plans for clients and providing those services which help to reduce behavioral health and medical suffering, therefore increasing the health, well-being, happiness and productivity of the clients we serve. Certified Recovery Support Specialist Program

A Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) is a professional with lived experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges, who has been trained and certified to help others as they move forward in their own recovery. There are many pathways to recovery. As someone who has experienced their own pathway to recovery, a CRSS serves as a role model and encourages hope for others on their pathway to recovery. Pediatric Clerkship

Our 4-week clerkship is a combination of inpatient, general practice and subspecialty experiences. We assign each student to a small team of physicians who assess student performance and provide feedback. Each student has an average of 30 half days of clinic experience over the course of the 4 weeks. Some schedules require students to round on their patients on weekends or nights. All schedules are set up based on physician clinical schedules.

Addiction Medicine Fellowship

The SIU Department of Family and Community Medicine sponsor a one-year ACGME accredited clinical fellowship in addiction medicine. This fellowship is available to physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited residency. We provide training necessary to recognize and treat patients with addiction, including substance use disorders, co-occurring psychiatric and medical disorders, detoxification, pharmacotherapy, motivational interviewing, harm-reduction and abstinence-based recovery models.
