SIU Urology Welcomes Urologic Oncology & Robotic Surgeon, Dr. Kara Babaian

SIU Urology welcomes Dr. Kara Babaian to the faculty. Dr. Babaian is an Assistant Professor in Urology and the Director of Urologic Oncology at SIU School of Medicine. She provides comprehensive urologic oncology clinical care for men and women diagnosed with urologic malignancies. Dr. Babaian performs open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery, individually tailored for the needs of patients with cancers of the kidney, bladder, and prostate. Dr. Babaian earned her medical degree from The University of Texas McGovern School of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She then went on to complete a Urology

SIU Vascular Surgery names Dr. Khalil Qato as Residency Program Director

Dr. Khalil Qato has been named program director of the Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency at SIU School of Medicine. Dr. Qato recently joined the SIU Vascular Surgery faculty as an assistant professor of surgery. Dr. Qato previously practiced at Lenox Hill Hospital/Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University in New York where he has demonstrated a strong commitment to vascular surgery education while serving as the associate program director of the Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency and as site director of 3rd-year rotations and 4th-year sub-internships. SIU Welcomes Class of 2021 with White Coat Ceremony

Seventy-four medical students began their medical training last week at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale. The students participated in a “White Coat Ceremony” on Friday, August 11, in Shryock Auditorium. During the ceremony, Debra Klamen, MD, MHPE, senior associate dean for education and curriculum and chair of the Department of Medical Education, welcomed the students and read the Hippocratic Oath. SIU Work Group to Explore Rural Care Needs, Coordination

SIU School of Medicine has 23 clinics and health service facilities in a 40,000 square mile expanse. It’s a distinctly rural area with more than 2.5 million people living in small urban areas, towns and farms. The SIU System Board of Trustees wants to develop a coordinated plan to unify the health services within this region and provide better rural health care to its residents. Its long-term goal is to position SIU as the nation’s leader in rural health care assessment, education and delivery. SIU-SOM Auditory Researchers Present At ARO Midwinter Meeting - San Diego CA

Auditory Researchers in the Department of Pharmacology gave 11 presentations at the 41st Annual Midwinter Meeting of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology held February 10-14 in San Diego, CA. Oral and poster presentations were given by members of Drs. Don Caspary, Brandon Cox, and Vic Ramkumar’s laboratories. The Association for Research in Otolaryngology was founded in 1973 and aims to encourage and promote research related to hearing loss, tinnitus, balance dysfunction, and basic science of the middle and inner ear.

SIUEM Alumni Day

SIU Emergency Medicine was proud to host the 4th Annual Alumni Day June 22nd, 2017 at the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation. Eleven alumni from the four graduated classes shared cases, work experiences and advice with SIUEM residents, including the soon to be class of 2017, and SIU SOM students. While many SIUEM graduates practice in central Illinois we were fortunate to have alumni return from Indiana, Iowa and California this year. SIUEM Chair Dr. David Griffen Receives ICEP Meritorious Service Award

Dr. David Griffen, Chair of the Division of Emergency Medicine at SIU, was honored today with the Dr. Bill Smiley Meritorious Service Award from the Illinois College of Emergency Physicians. He was recognized at the Annual Spring Symposium and recieved the honor from Dr. Valerie Phillips, outgoing President of ICEP. Throughout his career Dr. Griffen has served on various committes for ICEP, two terms on the executive board and completed a term as President in 2015.

SIUEM Orthopedic Skills Day

SIU Emergency Medicine residents and medical students participated in an orthopedic skills lab today at the Memorial Center for Learning and Innovation (MCLI.) Springfield Clinic orthopedic surgeon Dr. Matthew Gardner with the help of SIU orthopedic residents instructed learners on fracture reduction and proper splinting technique. A new addition to the training day was a simulated distal forearm fracture model. Southern Illinois University Division of Emergency Medicine faculty Drs. Richard Austin, Jonathon dela Cruz and Jason Kegg along with resident Dr. Tyler Fulks and nurses Allison Helmerichs and Matthew Helmerichs presented their project entitled Emergency Nursing Orientation: Improve Patient Assessments Using Multidisciplinary Simulaton at the 2018 Annual International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare in Los Angelese, California. SIUEM Presents Scholarly Projects at CORD EM

SIUEM residents Rik Austin (pictured) and Sven Steen as well as faculty members Rebecka Lopez and Chinmay Patel presented scholarly projects at the 2017 Council of Residency Directors for Emergnecy Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Projects included improving the reporting of errors, an innovative chest escharotomy model, multidisciplinary simulation and patient involvement in the quality improvement of healthcare delivery.
