Students Underrepresented in Medicine Find Their Home at SIU

Thirteen students who are underrepresented in medicine (URM) began their medical training in August at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) defines underrepresented in medicine as "racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population." The students participated in a white coat ceremony on Friday, August 11, in Shryock Auditorium. “We continue to attract diverse students, which helps us address the health care needs of the population,”

Study May Offer Clues to Alzheimer's Progression

As American lifespans increase due to progress made on other medical frontiers, the toll from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) grows. More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease, and by 2050 this number could rise as high as 16 million, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Tweet became interested in the topic while doing a fellowship at the Illinois Poison and Control Center in 2019. That spring, Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS: If you could take a drug that would help cure your cancer, but it would make you go deaf, would you still take the drug? Cisplatin is a widely used anticancer drug that unfortunately carries some major side effects, including hearing loss and damage to the nerves and kidneys. Its high toxicity often requires dose reductions or the use of less effective alternate drugs. Cisplatin-induced hearing loss can range from 50-75 percent in adults. When the drug is used to treat neuroblastomas in pediatric cancer patients, extreme care must be taken because hearing loss can hamper

Suicide support group to meet this fall

With suicide on the rise within the agriculture community, the Farm Family Resource Initiative is launching an open support group for farmers and farm family members 18 years and older who have lost a loved one to suicide. The group will meet monthly and the meetings will be held virtually. Survivors of suicide loss share a singular bond.
