August 24, 2016 Eight minority medical students in the Class of 2020 began their medical training last week at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale. “We continue to attract a diversity of students, which helps us address the health care needs of the population,” said Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion Wesley McNeese, MD, who presented the students. “Statistically, students from underrepresented groups are more likely to practice among underserved populations and to choose the general practice of medicine over specialization.” McNeese, who is a 1986 medical

Inspiring teens toward medical careers Do you know a Springfield-area high school or junior high student who dreams of becoming a doctor? The Physician Pipeline Preparatory Program, or P 4 , gives young people a head start into medical careers and provides them with early mentors within the Springfield medical community. The after-school program is sponsored by SIU School of Medicine in partnership with Springfield Public Schools (SPS) and the Sangamon County Medical Society. November, 2016 Dear Colleagues and Friends, The most recent AAMC Mission Management Tool ranked the SIU School of Medicine at 93rd percentile among US medical schools for the percentage of African American graduates over the past five years. Regarding our faculty, the SIU SOM ranked at 88th percentile for the percentage who are women and at 48th percentile for the percentage from underrepresented groups in medicine. Family physicians in eight Illinois communities are hosting students from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine January 30 – February 27. The students are participating in the school’s Family Medicine Preceptorship Program. The experience provides an opportunity for students to use their medical knowledge in an office setting under the supervision of an experienced physician. The students choose from more than 160 family practice physicians in Illinois for their preceptorship experience. They will graduate from medical school in May 2018, then pursue advanced training in a specific
