Institute for Plastic Surgery Welcomes New Chief

SIU Medicine welcomes Reuben A. Bueno Jr., MD , as chief of the Institute for Plastic Surgery. Bueno, board certified in plastic surgery and hand surgery, joins Drs. Berry , Calder , Cochran , Mailey , Neumeister , and Sommer at the Institute for Plastic Surgery. He returns to SIU after four years at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where he served as the interim chair of plastic surgery, chief of pediatric plastic surgery, and director of the plastic surgery residency training program. Institute of Plastic Surgery Mission

The long-term goal of the Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine and Applied Sciences is to develop a functional hybrid graft to heal full-thickness skin defects and explore the potential of epithelial-derived stem cells (LGR5+ and LGR6+) for burns, neuropathic ulcers, and hair regeneration. We are also exploring the potential of merging TRAIL (TNF-Related Apoptosis-Inducing Ligand) therapy with conventional breast reconstruction procedures to eliminate breast cancer recurrence after mastectomy.

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees Southern Illinois University School of Medicine's animal program, facilities and procedures. The committee's scope includes all research, research training, experimentation and biological testing involving live, vertebrate animals conducted at SIU School of Medicine or at another institution as a consequence of subcontracting by this institution. Institutional Memories

In the early ‘70s, Dean Richard Moy and recruiting officials had advertised for instructors at a new “medical school without walls.” The opportunity to create something original within the American medical education system appealed to both experienced professionals looking for change and young risk-takers ready to stretch their wings. As the School of Medicine evolved from an inspired idea to a well-respected institution, there were scores of dedicated people hired as the glue to hold the great experiment together. Three of the founding faculty are still here today, teaching students

Institutional Review Board (IRB)

Overview The SIU Medicine Institutional Review Board (IRB) is responsible for reviewing proposed research that includes humans as subjects. This includes any study that is: (1) sponsored by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine; (2) conducted in any school of medicine facility; or (3) conducted by school of medicine faculty, staff, residents, or medical students. Research to be performed by a community-based investigator and/or research to be conducted in any school of medicine-affiliated hospitals or sites may also be reviewed by the IRB with the appropriate authorization agreements
