Reflections: Cross-training

written by Wesley Robinson-McNeese, MD In 1976 I was a fledgling, weekly newspaper editor also working as a reserve Aeromedical Technician, part of the crew of a C-9 Nightingale flying out of Scott Air Force Base in southern Illinois. I never dreamed of becoming a physician. I had simply cross-trained from radio operator to something a bit more people-oriented and mobile, sure to get me off the airbase more than listening to dots and dashes through a headset. After hundreds of hours transporting patients from one military site to another, however, the ups and downs of my Air Force and

Regular PSA Screenings Catch Prostate Cancer for Petersburg Man

“I can’t have cancer. That’s somebody else,” thought Richard Dennis when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. But a slowly elevating prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood level suggested otherwise. PSA is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland. A PSA test uses a blood sample to measure the level of PSA in a man’s blood. The PSA blood level is often elevated

Remembering Dr. Tamara O'Neal

by Anneke Metz, PhD, Interim Director of MEDPREP All of us at MEDPREP (Medical/Dental Education Preparatory Program) were heartbroken to learn of the death of one of our own, Dr. Tamara O’Neal, who was a MEDPREP student from 2007-09. After MEDPREP, Tamara went on to complete her MD at the University of Illinois at Chicago, followed by a residency in emergency medicine. She was working as an emergency department physician at Mercy Hospital in Chicago at the time of her death. Dr. O’Neal, who was affectionately known at “TO” by her colleagues and friends, was beloved for her smile, her kindness

Remote Learning Resources Guide

On March 17, 2020, public schools closed across the state of Illinois in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19. As of March 27, 2020, 1.5 billion children worldwide were impacted by school closures. With these closures, many schools quickly transitioned to remote learning. While college classes may more easily shift to audio-recorded lectures and online learning platforms like Blackboard, K-12 teachers had to face a new reality in class preparation. Past studies have considered the impact that localized environmental crises had on students’ education. However, these environmental crises
