August 5, 2020 – SIU Medicine, in coordination with the Sangamon County Department of Public Health (SCDPH) and the Office of the Mayor, recently relaunched a testing site at SCDPH to meet the immediate need for expanded testing in Sangamon County. Testing is now available only on select days at 2833 S. Grand Avenue East in the parking area adjacent to the public health building. All testing slots are open during the following times, weather permitting. The site is closed on Wednesdays. Testing hours are: Monday: 9-11 a.m. | 4-7 p.m. Tuesday: 9-11 a.m. | 4-7 p.m. Thursday: 9-11 a.m. | 4-7 p.m
May 13, 2020 – SPRINGFIELD - Seventy new physicians and a graduate student at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine achieved degrees Saturday, May 16, in the school’s virtual celebration of commencement ( view the ceremony here ). The event was doubly historic: The Class of 2020 included the medical school’s 3,000 th graduate during its 50 th anniversary year. Authorities have long anticipated the U.S. would face a shortage of physicians as the Baby Boomer generation aged and outpaced medical school graduates. The warnings have become more dire as COVID-19 induces the nation’s aging physician workforce to consider early retirement or at least significantly reduce its workload. Medical schools like Southern Illinois University School of Medicine have taken a first step in addressing the shortage by expanding the overall number of medical students enrolled in their institutions. 27 th annual edition of Scope published Southern Illinois University School of Medicine unveiled the 2020 edition of SCOPE, a literary magazine produced each spring by SIU medical students. The new volume contains more than 40 poems, short stories and pieces of artwork submitted by students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the school.
