May 13, 2020 – SPRINGFIELD - Seventy new physicians and a graduate student at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine achieved degrees Saturday, May 16, in the school’s virtual celebration of commencement ( view the ceremony here ). Authorities have long anticipated the U.S. would face a shortage of physicians as the Baby Boomer generation aged and outpaced medical school graduates. The warnings have become more dire as COVID-19 induces the nation’s aging physician workforce to consider early retirement or at least significantly reduce its workload. Medical schools like Southern Illinois University School of Medicine have taken a first step in addressing the shortage by expanding the overall number of medical students enrolled in their institutions. 27 th annual edition of Scope published Southern Illinois University School of Medicine unveiled the 2020 edition of SCOPE, a literary magazine produced each spring by SIU medical students. The new volume contains more than 40 poems, short stories and pieces of artwork submitted by students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the school.
