Education

The Department of Medical Humanities offers a curriculum designed to provide students with a core knowledge in the humanities, emphasizing application of the content and methodologies of humanities disciplines to the practice of medicine. Department faculty provide educational experiences for undergraduate medical students during Years 1 and 2. During Year 3, the Department delivers a one-week curricular clerkship, entitled "The Physician-Patient Relationship," as well as multiple integrated modules and learning experiences that form part of the clinical clerkships. Lectures

Medical Humanities hosts several visiting lecturers every year: Pearson Lecture: The lecture and museum are named in honor of Dr. Emmet F. Pearson, a Springfield physician who was also a professor emeritus in the internal medicine and medical humanities departments at SIU. He died in June 1996. Theodore R. LeBlang Distinguished Lectureship in Law and Medicine: Professor Theodore LeBlang was the mainstay of the Law and Medicine teaching program for every class of students who have graduated from the school since its inception in 1975. He retired in 2006.
