Department of Population Science and Policy awarded $250,000 grant to improve health outcomes

Southern Illinois University (SIU) Medicine Department of Population Science and Policy has been awarded $250,000 by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois for work to improve health outcomes in central and southern Illinois. “This gift showcases the incredible investment Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois is making to improve health in Illinois,” said Dr. Sameer Vohra, Chair, SIU Medicine Department of Population Science and Policy. “We’re thankful for this generous grant and look forward to using these funds to address health challenges in the Illinois communities that need it the most.”

Department of Population Science and Policy Receives Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois Grant

Project will address children’s knowledge about nutrition and nutrition-related diseases. Dec. 16, 2019, Springfield, IL – Southern Illinois University School of Medicine Department of Population Science and Policy (PSP), a nontraditional academic medical department aiming to understand and advance health, development and wellness in central and southern Illinois, is the recipient of a $45,000 “Healthy Kids Healthy Families” grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. Department of Surgery Annual Teaching Awards 2019

The SIU School of Medicine Department of Surgery Annual Teaching Awards were presented on August 8, 2019. The awards are held to recognize the entire Department of Surgery faculty and are from General Surgery, Urology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Neurosurgery. Award recipients are chosen based upon the evaluations submitted by the residents about the faculty and are based on the numbers but more importantly, on the comments made by the residents. Department of Surgery residents present diverse research projects

The Department of Surgery was honored to welcome Ahmed Ghazi, MD as visiting professor for the 20th Annual Resident Research Day on Thursday, April 27. Dr. Ghazi is an Assistant Professor of Urology and Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Division at the Brady Urological Institute, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Ghazi is an innovator in the field of surgical simulation training, and made a presentation about teaching medical students and residents using surgical simulation. A message from Jeannette Waters, Community Affairs Specialist, Center for Family Medicine-Springfield The Holiday Season is fast approaching and we will be doing our annual drives in helping to provide Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets for some of our struggling patients. If you or your co-workers would like to donate food or put together a food basket for our low income patients, it would be greatly appreciated. Our division is focused on the education of future physicians and scientists in the field of dermatology, as dermatologists diagnose and treat more than 3,000 different diseases.
