Southern Illinois University (SIU) Medicine Department of Population Science and Policy has been awarded $250,000 by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois for work to improve health outcomes in central and southern Illinois. “This gift showcases the incredible investment Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois is making to improve health in Illinois,” said Dr. Sameer Vohra, Chair, SIU Medicine Department of Population Science and Policy. “We’re thankful for this generous grant and look forward to using these funds to address health challenges in the Illinois communities that need it the most.”

The SIU School of Medicine Department of Surgery Annual Teaching Awards were presented on August 8, 2019. The awards are held to recognize the entire Department of Surgery faculty and are from General Surgery, Urology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Neurosurgery. Award recipients are chosen based upon the evaluations submitted by the residents about the faculty and are based on the numbers but more importantly, on the comments made by the residents. The Department of Surgery was honored to welcome Ahmed Ghazi, MD as visiting professor for the 20th Annual Resident Research Day on Thursday, April 27. Dr. Ghazi is an Assistant Professor of Urology and Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Division at the Brady Urological Institute, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Ghazi is an innovator in the field of surgical simulation training, and made a presentation about teaching medical students and residents using surgical simulation.
