Grad students compete in 3-Minute Thesis challenge

SIU School of Medicine graduate students Olivia Slater and Savannah Brannan (Pharmacology) and Bristi Poudel (Physiology) competed in the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition in Carbondale on February 3. Savannah won third place.

2025 Rupak Thapa has been awarded The Richard and Donna Falvo Outstanding Dissertation Award. This award is granted to recognize and promote outstanding research by doctoral students. It is a testament to the vital contribution of doctoral student research to the life of the University, the various disciplines, and society at large. Arthur R. Menendez Memorial Fund for Graduate Student The award will be provided to a graduate student interested in a research career and can be used for research support such as expenditures for conferences, journals, papers, equipment, etc. Funds are awarded to the Physiology Department in odd numbered fiscal years and to the Psychology Department in even numbered fiscal years. The SIU General Surgery Residency has been very successful in preparing graduates for competitive fellowship and job opportunities. Over the last 10 years, graduates have matriculated in fellowships in colorectal surgery, trauma and surgical critical care, minimally invasive surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, surgical endoscopy, breast oncology, and transplant surgery. Similar to national averages, approximately 20% have gone directly into practice in general surgery upon completion of the residency.
