Grant Expands Children’s Health Care Efforts in Southern Illinois

Delta Region to add mental health component to school programs Communities and families in Illinois’ southernmost counties will have improved access to programs to combat chronic diseases thanks to a new $2.1 million federal grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Grant Review Committee (GRC) operating paper

Purpose The Grant Review Committee (GRC) serves solely for the purpose of peer reviewing research proposals for scientific merit. It acts as a reviewing agency for internal funding opportunities. The proposals are ranked based solely on scientific merit, which is then shared with the Allocation Committee for consideration of funding through SIU School of Medicine. Membership The GRC is composed of at least twenty-two (22) voting members and two (2) non-voting ex-officio members (Associate Dean for Research (ADR) and Director of the Center for Clinical Research). Grant submission process and forms

All applications for external funding, letters of intent including budget information, and subcontracts/consortia submitted from SIU School of Medicine must be reviewed and approved before submission through the ADR Office. To allow sufficient time for application review and approval, the following due dates must be adhered: Please send an initial notification of intent to apply for any mechanism and the funding agency guidelines as far in advance as possible, at the very least, 2 weeks prior to the submission deadline. Grants help Sangamon County improve services for individuals with mental illness, substance use disorders

As a result of reduced state and federal funding, jails and prisons have become de facto mental health facilities at both local and national levels. Staff members at these institutions are sometimes unable to manage this population’s specific needs. With help from SIU School of Medicine staff, Sangamon County Court Services received two grants to develop services provided to persons with mental illness (MI) or co-occurring substance abuse (CMISA) who are arrested and jailed for minor offenses. Grants to help Sangamon County divert people from jail

The Sangamon County Jail’s inmate population has exceeded its 285-beds capacity every year since 2002. For the past 16 years, the jail’s population has averaged 336, due in part to a significant increase in the proportion of court-involved individuals with mental illness (MI) or co-occurring substance abuse (CMISA). Sangamon County’s legal system does its best to handle the growing numbers of the mentally ill population.
