“Why wouldn’t I give?” That’s the reason Mark Townsend offers when he’s asked about his contributions to SIU School of Medicine and Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU. “Both of my parents died from cancer – one in 2003 and the other in 2005,” Townsend says. “In 2005, I was also diagnosed with cancer.” Fortunately, Townsend’s cancer was detected and treated at an early stage. In 2016, Anneke Metz, PhD, interim director of MEDPREP, undertook a study of MEDPREP alumni to measure the program’s effectiveness. Since its founding in 1970, SIU School of Medicine has included instruction in the medical humanities to balance the focus placed on the applied sciences.
