Plastic Surgery residency curriculum overview

Mentorship model SIU Plastic Surgery utilizes a mentorship model. There are five full-time plastic surgery faculty and one clinical part-time faculty. That resident is responsible for keeping the same schedule as the attending, including attending all cases, outpatient procedures in the office, rounds, orders, and notes from PGY1-6. This may also mean additional multidisciplinary boards for any patients for that month (VPI clinic, Head and neck tumor board, Melanoma clinic and tumor board, Breast tumor board). This model allows for a

Points of Pride

A partial list of our notable accomplishments and innovations. SIU School of Medicine was the first institution to incorporate problem-based learning and standardized patients into its medical school curriculum. We were the first medical school in the U.S. to require a clinical competency examination before graduation. The exam is now a model for physician licensure throughout the country. The Professional Development Laboratory allows evaluation of students in standardized and real patient encounters in a precise replica of an exam room. It was the first such facility in the nation, providing

Police Brutality and Public Health

Police brutality illuminates a dark history in our society. There is no single universally agreed upon definition or guideline for when to use force. However, we know it when we see it. Police brutality was clearly on display when adults, children and our community witnessed George screaming he couldn’t breathe, crying out for his mother, and passing away as a knee was placed on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds. We saw a profound, inconceivable tragedy. As physicians, we take a Hippocratic Oath. Witnessing this brutality without taking action violates our oath. Our collective response
