Strong EM showing at SIU GME Resident and Fellow Quality Improvement Poster Competition

SIU Emergency Medicine residents presented quality projects at the Graduate Medical Education Resident and Fellow Quality Improvement Poster Competition and Symposium. Dr. Shreya Lankala, PGY-3, took first place for "Cost of Quality Waste from Inappropriate Urine Culture Testing in the Emergency Department." Dr. Alexis Koda, PGY-3, presented "Optimizing MRI Utilization in the Emergency Department" and Dr. Mark Baker, PGY-2, presented "Appropriate CT Cervical Spine Utilization in the Emergency Department."

Structure

Our 4 week clerkship is a combination of inpatient, general practice and subspecialty experiences. We assign each student to a small team of physicians who assess student performance and provide feedback. Each student has an average of 30 half days of clinic experience over the course of the 4 weeks. Some schedules require students to round on their patients on weekends or nights. All schedules are set up based on physician clinical schedules.

Core Internal Medicine Clerkship Internal Medicine encompasses a broad spectrum of knowledge that is foundational for any subsequent specialty that a student chooses to pursue. Exceptional patient care requires not only medical knowledge, but the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, an understanding of the social determinants of health, the importance of safe transitions of care, and operating within the healthcare system. Structure

During the first eight months of the third year students rotate through all core clerkships. Each clerkship is 4-weeks in duration. The final 15 weeks consist of students selecting from a comprehensive list of selectives that are offered from all departments and specialties within the school of medicine. During the 4-week surgery core clerkship each student is randomly assigned one faculty preceptor from one of ten surgical specialties. The Department of Psychiatry provides education and training in each year of the medical school curriculum, establishing the pre-requisite didactic and clinical knowledge as well as clinical skills for interested students to become successful candidates for psychiatric residency training. The structure of the Year 3 neurology clerkship consists of two weeks of inpatient service experiences and outpatient clinic rotations. The specialty areas in neurology include Alzheimer’s Disease, Epilepsy, Neuroimmunology, Neuromuscular Medicine, Neuropathology, Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders, and Vascular Neurology, (Stroke). Core Students will spend approximately four weeks with a practicing family physician. Students will provide patient care in both the ambulatory and hospital setting under the direct supervision of the preceptor. Each student is expected to participate, as fully as possible, in the day-to-day activities of the preceptor. Personalized Education Plan (PEP) This is a thirteen week program for our students, entitled PEP alongside with the Y4 electives.
