Core Clerkship The core Emergency Medicine Clerkship is a four week clinical experience located at Memorial Medical Center and Saint Johns Hospital in Springfield, IL. Students will work a number of shifts at both hospitals performing the initial evaluation of patients, developing differential diagnoses and treatment plans while continuing to follow their patients progress in the Emergency Department. Your interview day will take place in Springfield, Illinois. The day begins at 8:15 am with a welcome and presentation by a representative from the Admissions Committee. Interviews begin as early as 9 am and will conclude no later than 4 pm. Between 11 am and 1 pm, the opportunity exists to speak to a financial aid officer, tour the medical instructional facility and meet with current students. A Welcome Reception is held in the Fall of odd years after new students arrive at the Springfield IL campus to begin the Pharmacology & Neuroscience Graduate Program. This event allows the new students to meet and mingle with other graduate students and department faculty in a casual atmosphere. Each March Pharmacology & Neuroscience graduate students organize Brain Awareness Day at Franklin Middle School in Springfield. During Brain Awareness Day, students and research staff deliver a neuroscience presentation to educate 7th and 8th grade students on basic brain anatomy and physiology. The

Student Computer Purchase Information

Students may submit a request to add the purchase of a computer or tablet to their student loan. SIU School of Medicine will approve the purchase of a computer and PDA (including printer) for up to $1,500 or a tablet for up to $600. Students who already own a computer may be able to upgrade it with less expense. Both SIU School of Medicine libraries have laptops that can be borrowed. Student Day of Service

SIU medical students step out of the classrooms and clinics and into the community for a Student Day of Service on Saturday, August 24. Learners will tackle chores in the Springfield neighborhoods adjacent to the Mid-Illinois Medical District that include alley clean-up, maintenance and landscaping improvements at Enos Park, Pillsbury Mills and their community gardens.

Medical Students Our physicians and all providers enjoy teaching. Our clinic providers bring an engaging experience for medical students to care for patients across the lifespan. The SIU Family Medicine Residency Program has Family Medicine faculty physicians that work with medical students during their second year in a longitudinal mentoring experience to offer wonderful continuity of education through care for similar patients.
