Proficiency in bedside ultrasonography is a core skill set required of today’s EM residency graduates. It has not only proven to aid in more timely and accurate diagnoses, but has also shown to improve patient treatments and outcomes. The Division of Ultrasound was formed to further advance point-of-care ultrasound access and expertise at Southern Illinois University and its surrounding communities. Prior to its inception, the main focus of the faculty was the development of a core ultrasound curriculum for emergency medicine residents. “My mother died of cancer when I was a teenager. At a very young age, I was determined to do something in this field,” said Bethanie Russell, who is among five college undergraduates chosen for a Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) summer internship working in a lab with cancer researchers. Each intern will do a presentation to faculty and staff at SCI in August on the research they participated in over the summer. Russell is a native of Huzhou City, China, and plans to attend the University of Illinois-Springfield after finishing her second year at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield
