Scientists at the University of Illinois Springfield and SIU School of Medicine are teaming up to investigate how certain cells in the body connect and encourage the spread of cancer.
Proficiency in bedside ultrasonography is a core skill set required of today’s EM residency graduates. It has not only proven to aid in more timely and accurate diagnoses, but has also shown to improve patient treatments and outcomes. SIU’s EM residency training provides its residents with a robust emergency ultrasound curriculum. It is designed to provide the future EM physician with the technical skills of performing procedures and examinations confidently while also providing a strong foundation in ultrasound interpretation. Starting with an introductory didactic and skills sessions, the
The Division of Ultrasound was formed to further advance point-of-care ultrasound access and expertise at Southern Illinois University and its surrounding communities. Prior to its inception, the main focus of the faculty was the development of a core ultrasound curriculum for emergency medicine residents. This has now grown to where our faculty have many other responsibilities that include: Developing and implementing SIU School of Medicine's undergraduate Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum Developing and implementing POCUS electives for third and forth year medical students

“My mother died of cancer when I was a teenager. At a very young age, I was determined to do something in this field,” said Bethanie Russell, who is among five college undergraduates chosen for a Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) summer internship working in a lab with cancer researchers. Each intern will do a presentation to faculty and staff at SCI in August on the research they participated in over the summer. Russell is a native of Huzhou City, China, and plans to attend the University of Illinois-Springfield after finishing her second year at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield
Sometimes, despite everyone’s best efforts, you will encounter a resident who is not performing at their level of training. Approximately 10% of residents across multiple specialties struggle with underperformance due to academic and/or professionalism issues at some point, and among surgical programs, the prevalence may be closer to 20-30%. Proactively addressing underperformance is stressful, but not addressing performance problems early usually becomes even more stressful. If you have a resident with performance problems, keep these things in mind: The earlier performance problems are
