Traditions Return: Division of Orthopedic Surgery hosts annual lecture

The Division of Orthopedic Surgery was delighted to host the 38th Annual E. Shannon Stauffer Visiting Professor Lectureship at an in-person gathering on June 24, 2022. This year’s visiting professor was Dr. Daniel Oakes, Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and the Director of the USC Joint Replacement Program. More than 80 trainee researchers shared findings from their most promising scientific and clinical investigations at the 33rd Annual Trainee Research Symposium on April 18 and 21 at SIU School of Medicine.

Trainee Research Symposium--Guidelines and Directions

Friday, April 17, 2020, 8:30 a.m. (Carbondale students will not present before 10 a.m.) South Auditorium, Bohn/Nielsen Lobby, and Pearson Museum Springfield Campus Eligibility: Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows are invited to submit research abstracts for presentation (oral or poster) at the Symposium. Participants must be first author, and the work must have been conducted under the guidance of an SIU faculty member. Only one abstract submission AS FIRST AUTHOR is allowed per trainee. The faculty mentor must approve the submitted abstract, including authorship. Symposium Format

Training and Using Standardized Patients for Teaching and Assessment

This workshop is designed to teach participants to recruit, train, and supervise the performance of standardized patients for both teaching and assessment. In addition to the strong focus on basic standardized patient training skills, case/checklist development and program maintenance will be covered. The workshop will be largely experiential with standardized patients being trained and cases written. The workshop will culminate on the final day with a dry run of the cases developed during the workshop.

Transfer Admission

Advanced Standing Policy SIU School of Medicine does not accept applications for advanced standing. Students from foreign medical schools or any other non-LCME-approved programs will be required to apply for first-year entry. Transfer Policy Southern Illinois University School of Medicine occasionally accepts transfers from other LCME-approved allopathic medical schools. Transfer applications are considered only in the event of a vacancy in the class due to our students' attrition. Transfers are not accepted into the fourth year.
