Breaking dementia’s stigma: What is Alzheimer’s and what can we do to help?

In recent years, the conversation around Alzheimer’s and dementia has shifted. While there is still progress to be made for the public's understanding of the disorder, there has been heightened awareness of what dementia looks like and how it affects someone. It's permeated pop culture as well. NBC’s hit show “This is Us” featured a main character with Alzheimer’s, showing the intricacies and evolution of the disease. Families of celebrities like Tony Bennett have used their elevated platform to raise awareness of the challenges it can bring. Recently, Bruce Willis’ family publicly shared his

Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction involves recreating a breast after a mastectomy with expanders, implants or using the patient's own skin/fat. Breast reconstruction also involves treating breast deformity/asymmetry. Before you begin breast cancer treatment, consider your breast reconstruction options. Your general surgeon should discuss the option of breast reconstructive surgery with you and offer you a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss your options more in-depth. Patients can choose to undergo breast reconstruction immediately, that is, at the time of mastectomy, or delayed, at a second

Breast reconstruction awareness day & breast cancer awareness month for October

SIU Medicine joins other organizations and families around the country in celebrating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month during October. An often overlooked aspect of breast cancer awareness is life after breast cancer surgery. Though a mastectomy can save a woman's life, it can also leave her reeling with unexpected emotions and challenges. For this reason, SIU Medicine encourages our communities to honor another

Breath & wellness

Breathing and heart rate are intimately tied to the bodily expression of emotions. Patterns within heart rate variability are more significant than the simple rate. In states of stress, anxiety, anger and sadness the variation tends to be disordered and chaotic. In positive emotional states such as love, social connection and gratitude, the variation tends to be ordered and rhythmic. There are multiple approaches to breathing that are associated with improved physical and emotional health. Two are described here. Coherent breathing involves conscious breathing at the frequency of 5-6 breaths
