HOSTS: Student Registration

What you can expect

We encourage students to have a in-depth connection with the alumni host about the residency program, the prospective medical center, quality of life questions (e.g. local housing market, cost of living, and local school systems), and other pertinent topics. We hope students will approach the time spent with the alumni as a valuable learning experience. If the opportunity presents itself during a video call, please take a photo of yourself and your Host and send it to us. The photo will be used as part of a HOSTS program photo gallery on the School of Medicine alumni web page.

Professionalism

Students are ambassadors for SIU School of Medicine and should behave in a thoughtful, professional, respectful, and courteous manner at all times.

IMPORTANT

Maintaining our alum's privacy is paramount, so when you receive your list with contact information, that data is NOT to be shared or given to anyone else, made public, or to be used for any other purposes aside from one-on-one mentorship. By participating in this program, you agree to maintain confidentiality for our alumni mentors.

Who initiates communication?

You will be responsible for reaching out to the alumni and setting up a meeting (in-person, virtual, or phone call). Please email (or call/text depending on alum's contact preference) our alumni first to request a time that works best for their schedules. Should your schedule change and you are unable to meet with your mentor, out of respect for their time, please reach out to them and cancel your meeting, reschedule, and always thank them for the opportunity to connect.

Do I need to do anything after using the program?

Yes, to show gratitude to your alumni mentor, we ask that you send a thank you note and complete our HOSTS Program Feedback Form regarding your HOSTS experience within 10 days of your discussion/meeting. We will gladly provide you with their mailing address upon request.
