Alzheimer's researchers note cause of Alzheimer's to be multifaceted in new article

In August 2020, Erin Hascup PhD, Alzheimer's Center Director, and Kevin Hascup PhD, Assistant Professor published "Toward refining Alzheimer's disease into overlapping subgroups." The topic of the article is to present an alternative hypothesis that AD is the result of multiple interrelated causalities. The intention of this manuscript is to initiate a discussion regarding these multiple causalities and their overlapping similarities. The idea of creating subgroups allows for better identification of biomarkers across a narrower patient population for improved pharmacotherapeutic opportunities

Amanda Mulch, MD, named Assistant Dean of Student Affairs

Amanda Mulch, MD, has been named Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Student Affairs provides a variety of services for SIU learners: career education, mentoring, debt counseling, and more, as its staff seeks opportunities to improve the learning environment for students. Amber Fifer named Associate Director of CCR

Dr. Amber Fifer has been appointed associate director of the Center for Clinical Research. Amber joined the school in 2014 as a research assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and has served as their director of clinical research. Amber earned her doctor of pharmacy degree at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1997. In addition to her involvement on multiple CCR teams, Amber has been an Institutional Review Board (IRB) member at SIU since 2009 and was recently appointed to the SIU Conflict of Interest Committee. Before joining SIU, Amber worked at St. John's Hospital for 12 years

American Women Physcians in World War I Exhibit

The Medical Library is currently hosting the American Medical Women's Association's (AMWA) ehxibit "American Women Phyicians in WWI." The exhibit will he on display until March 4th, 2019. Amid national 'opioid epidemic' methamphetamine often overlooked

A new study shows methamphetamine remains a stubbornly prevalent illicit substance in large swaths of rural America. Findings recently published in JAMA Network Open indicate that methamphetamine is driving overdoses in rural communities. About four of five people who use drugs in rural areas across 10 states reported using meth in the past 30 days, according to researchers at Oregon Health & Science University, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and other institutions. “Methamphetamine use is pervasive among people who use drugs in rural communities,” said Todd Korthuis, MD, MPH

An Award-Winning Effort to Manage Diabetes

A pair of patients at the SIU Endocrinology Clinic celebrated major milestones in November. Springfield resident Matthew Derber, 31, has been living with Type 1 diabetes for 25 years. Julia Lopez, 38, of Chatham, has been monitoring and self-medicating for 28 years. Matt was diagnosed at age 6 and Julia at age 10. Type 1 diabetes can occur at any age but is most commonly diagnosed from infancy to the late 30s. Editor's note: In February 2018, SIU Medicine had a representative at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea.
