Welcome to the Office of Grants and Contracts at SIU Medicine. Our knowledgeable team assists in the preparation and review of grant applications that our staff and faculty submit to external agencies. We ensure institutional policies are honored on all external grant applications, awards and contracts. As funding becomes increasingly competitive, our office strives to ensure that all research proposals are properly vetted and supported to maximize our community members’ ability to make continued contributions to the medical field.

Biomedical Science Master's Degree (BMS)

The Biomedical Science master's degree (BMS) is a one-year, 30-credit non-thesis master’s degree for students pursuing health careers (including medicine, dentistry, physician's assistant, and anesthesiology assistant). The BMS aims to help students increase their competitiveness for professional school applications through an earned graduate degree. The program features rigorous pre-professional coursework in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry as well as electives in pharmacology, microbiology, immunology, and more. Students will receive personalized assistance in the application process

Alliance for Women in Medicine and Science

What began in January 2015 as an informal gathering within the Department of Medicine has since evolved into a dynamic and impactful organization—originally known as the Alliance for Women in Medicine (AWIM). Over time, AWIM became an integral part of SIU Medicine and our broader community. In 2018, the group expanded into a schoolwide initiative, adopting the name Alliance for Women in Medicine and Science (AWIMS) to reflect a broader, more inclusive focus on both medicine and science. The OCHW team is led by experienced and compassionate community health workers, community health educators, nurses and licensed clinical social workers. We’re trained in evidence-based techniques like motivational interviewing and trauma-informed care to help us develop trusting relationships with our neighbors throughout central and southern Illinois. We offer a range of exclusive and research-informed programs designed to create community health workers of the future while also promoting better health for our patients in real time. Alzheimer's Center

The Dale and Deborah Smith Center for Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment at SIU Medicine provides clinical care, research and community programs throughout Illinois. Since 1986, its employees have diagnosed, treated and educated Illinois families with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. In the past year, the center, along with its Memory and Aging Network, has served more than 4,000 patients and their families.

Family Medicine Residency Program | Decatur

Welcome to the SIU Family Medicine Residency Program - Decatur. We serve Decatur, Illinois and the surrounding central Illinois communities. Residents are based at the SIU Center for Family Medicine - Decatur, which is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Our residents will experience taking care of patients in the inpatient, outpatient, and nursing home settings. Our goal is to provide a balanced full scope Family Medicine educational experience to each resident.

$1.86M grant helps SIU scientist broaden brain research into autism

Ben Richardson, Ph.D. , has spent his career studying functions and circuits in the brain and what causes them to behave abnormally, especially within an area called the cerebellum. His work has encompassed alcohol use disorder, tinnitus and aging's effects on hearing, and dopamine signaling and reward. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently created a grant to support young scientists like Richardson who are willing to take a leap and expand their work into new areas. $2.8 Million NIH Grant Advances Hearing Loss Research

Aug. 26, 2015 - Southern Illinois University School of Medicine researcher Kathleen Campbell, PhD, professor in the Department of Surgery, has secured a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to advance her decades of research in hearing loss prevention and treatment. The total budget for the project is $2.8 million. This grant will determine the optimal dosing level of D-methionine (D-met), a compound that has been shown to prevent hearing loss. D-met is an amino acid that has been found to protect against noise-induced hearing loss and ototoxicity, or damage to the ear
