SIU scientist receives DOD grant to advance hearing loss treatments

The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded a $1.5 million grant to SIU Medicine scientist Brandon Cox, PhD, to test compounds that are predicted to stimulate regeneration of hair cells used for hearing. The process could illuminate a path to restore human hearing loss.

SIU scientist studying brain mechanisms to find roots of aggression

SIU research scientist Jacob Nordman, PhD, has been awarded a $445K grant to uncover how the effects of stress on the brain in childhood can lead to long-lasting aggressive behavior in adults.

SIU SOM Outstanding Scholar

The SIU SOM Oustanding Scholar award was presented to Laurent Brard, MD, PhD, a professor in the Department of OB/GYN. Dr. Brard is currently the PI on an NIH/NCI grant addressing rural cancer health disparities, a partnership grant with Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University in St. Louis. In addition, he has more than 80 publications in peer reviewed journals; almost half of those since joining SIU in 2010.

SIU students & residents honored at Trainee Research Symposium

May 14, 2019 — Young researchers at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine show great promise as they pursued answers to scientific queries during the 29th annual Trainee Research Symposium held recently at the medical school. The two-day symposium on April 23 and 26 offered trainees in Springfield and Carbondale an opportunity to gain experience in making formal presentations of their research findings. SIU Students Champions of Simulation Competition

Two teams composed of third year medical students from SIU SOM recently competed in a simulation competition at Jump Trading Center in Peoria, Illinois hosted by the University of Illinois College of Medicine - Peoria. SIU did very well in the competition taking first and second place amongst teams from throughout Illinois. Students worked together to navigate situations such as a precipitous delivery and a tension pneumothorax. SIUEM is very proud of our EM bound students - great work!

SIU Surgeon Earns Outstanding Faculty Teacher Award

The American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons has named Michael Neumeister, MD, FACS, chair of the Department of Surgery and a professor of surgery at SIU School of Medicine, the organization's first Outstanding Faculty Teacher. The council will present the award during its annual business meeting on Saturday, April 6, in Baltimore. Neumeister joined SIU Medicine as an assistant professor of surgery in 1997. In 2012, he was promoted to chair of the Department of Surgery. Neumeister is considered an international expert in reconstruction, hand and microsurgery. A native of Victoria, British
