SIU School of Medicine grants degrees to Class of 2024

SPRINGFIELD, IL New physicians at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine received their diplomas Saturday, May 18, at the school’s 50th annual commencement. The ceremony at the Performing Arts Center at the University of Illinois Springfield celebrated the achievements of the graduates and featured speeches from faculty members, alumni and administrators. A total of 79 learners received medical degrees, and one student received a master’s degree. It was the school’s largest class of graduating physicians ever. Seventy-two physicians and three graduate students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine received their diplomas Saturday, May 22, at the school’s 47 th annual commencement. The ceremony was held at Ken Leonard Field on the Sacred Heart-Griffin campus in Springfield. SIU School of Medicine Dean and Provost Jerry Kruse, MD, MSPH, awarded diplomas to the medical students, and SIU Systems President Daniel Mahony, PhD, conferred the degrees. SIU School of Medicine named Wei Du, researcher in the Research Core Facility, as the recipient of the 2025 Frank J. Toth Research Award . This honor recognizes non-faculty research personnel whose work significantly advances SIU School of Medicine's research mission. The award commemorates Frank J. On Nov. 21, SIU School of Medicine hosted the 2019 Leadership Springfield class for a morning of education and leadership in health care. SIU School of Medicine named a Skin Smart Campus

The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has presented SIU School of Medicine (SIU SOM) its Skin Smart Campus Award in recognition of the school’s efforts to educate and protect against the disease. Medical school students and staff have pledged to promote skin cancer prevention and sun safety education and not allow indoor tanning devices on its the campus and in its affiliated buildings.
