SIU School of Medicine elects new alumni board members

Two new board members have been named to the Alumni Society Board of Governors at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The new board members are Stephen Raben, MD, a family physician and a member of the Class of 1990; and Mark Schmelzel, MD, a retired vascular and general surgeon and a member of the Class of 1979. Their three-year terms began in May. Raben is board certified in family medicine, geriatrics, hospice and palliative medicine and is medical director of Family Hospice in Belleville. SIU School of Medicine expands Kenniebrew events

Each February SIU hosts a series of events to honor Dr. Alonzo Kenniebrew, the first Black physician in the United States to build and operate a private surgical hospital. The 2023 Kenniebrew Lecture and Forum has expanded to include an all-day medical conference on Friday, February 17.

SIU School of Medicine grants degrees to Class of 2022

New physicians and research scientists at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine received their diplomas Saturday, May 21, at the school’s 48th annual commencement. The ceremony was held at the Performing Arts Center at the University of Illinois Springfield. Commencement speaker Regina Rabinovich, MD, MPH, encouraged the new doctors in the Class of 2022 to take advantage of their opportunities at a unique moment in history, and become advocates as well as healers.
