Cardiology Fellowship Goals

The goal of the Cardiology Fellowship is to prepare trainees for a career in cardiovascular medicine either within the clinical practice sector or within academic cardiology. Critical to this goal is a solid foundation in Clinical Cardiology in all areas within the rotations provided during the fellowship program. Each rotation has specific goals and objectives and a curriculum is provided both in print and electronically for all trainees. Fellows will be assigned rotations to meet the requirements for Cardiology Fellowship training and then use their elective months to pursue career interests

Cardiothoracic Research

SIU Cardiothoracic Surgery has a strong research program that has resulted in greater than 200 publications and presentations. The results from our research efforts influence the care of patients with diseases of the chest. Some of the major areas of research interest of our faculty include lung cancer, valvular heart disease, esophageal disorders, and surgical treatment for emphysema. While involved in research in all of these areas Dr. Hazelrigg is well known for major contributions in the examination and application of minimally invasive chest surgeries. Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. McElveen visits MEDPREP

MEDPREP was honored to host Dr. Russell McElveen, D.O. (center, in blue blazer) for Convocation this Thursday, February 15, 2018. Dr. McElveen partices cardiothoracic surgery with the SIH medical group at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale. Dr.McElveen has been a generous mentor to our students through shadowing experiences, and shared the story of his career with first and second year MEDPREP students at the event.

Cardiothoracic Surgery

SIU Cardiothoracic Surgery consists of five board-certified surgeons and five mid-level providers in cardiac and thoracic surgery located in Springfield. We represent the largest volume provider of heart, lung and esophageal surgery in downstate Illinois and the largest academic program in the state. We presently have open trials to study all aspects of heart and lung surgery. These trials allow us to offer both cutting-edge treatments for patients as well as study these areas for future benefit. Medical Student Elective Goal The goal of this elective is to provide the student with the opportunity to observe common conditions that affect heart, lung, esophagus and intrathoracic contents that are treated in a surgical fashion. Most commonly, this will involve coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease, lung cancer, emphysema, esophageal cancer, and esophageal reflux. SIU Medicine, Salvation Army partner for clinic On a cold December day, a man staying at the winter warming shelter found out from a friend that free walk-in health services were available at SIU Medicine. Homeless, just recently returned to central Illinois from Oregon and in need of a primary care physician to help with ADD, he ventured over to SIU Medicine’s recently established clinic at the Salvation Army on Clear Lake.
