Visiting student policy
Visiting student application service (VSAS)
SIU School of Medicine is a Host and Home school utilizing the AAMC Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS).
Guidelines for visiting medical students
SIU School of Medicine welcomes Senior students from other institutions accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to participate in the fourth-year elective study.
To be approved for an elective study at SIU School of Medicine, a visiting medical student must be in good academic standing, have completed the equivalent of any prerequisites listed for the desired course before actually participating in the elective experience, be covered by personal health and malpractice insurance, and provide documentation of required immunizations.
Students may apply for visiting student status at any time. Enrollment decisions for visiting students will be made following registration and the open enrollment period for SIU School of Medicine students, usually mid-June. Please note: All paperwork must be submitted four weeks before the beginning of the elective experience.
SIU School of Medicine has no “official housing” available for visiting medical students. The student will be responsible for travel and living expenses. There are no fees or tuition charged to visiting medical students.
If a student accepted for elective study at SIU School of Medicine must cancel participation in the course for any reason, the Registrar in the Office of Student Affairs should be notified in writing as soon as possible, and the application should be withdrawn from VSAS.
