Honor Medical Society Welcomes New Members

The Eta Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine inducted 14 new members at its spring banquet held May 19 at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield. Newly inducted members from the Class of 2018 include: Sian Best, daughter of James and Mary Best of Champaign; Kody Bolk, son of Tim and Carrie Bolk of Carlyle; and Madison Marvel of Dunlap, daughter of Mike and Dena Marvel of San Diego. They joined seven members from the Class of 2017 who were nominated to AOA in the fall of 2016: Lindsey Atwood, MD, daughter of John and Mary

Honoring Dr. Folse

J. Roland Folse, MD, Endowed Chair of Surgery J. Roland Folse, MD, has been single-minded in his life's ambition of wanting to serve humanity. He is a visionary who dreamed of building a Department of Surgery for the community. As a pioneer physician of SIU School of Medicine, Dr. Folse has realized his dream and made the Department of Surgery a recognized leader in health care. Honoring Dr. Moy

Richard H. Moy, Chair in Medical Education Richard H. Moy, MD, earned both his bachelor’s and medical degrees at the University of Chicago, where he also interned at the University Clinics. After service at the National Cancer Institute, he returned to finish his residency in internal medicine, subsequently serving as chief resident and a U.S. Public Health Service Fellow. By 1969 he had risen to the rank of Associate Professor in Medicine at the University of Chicago and held several administrative assignments. Honoring Dr. Rabinovich

Dr. Rabinovich, a native of Lima, Peru, joined SIU in 1973, shortly after the school was created. He became chairman and residency director of the Department of Medicine in 1974. Dr. Rabinovich retired in 1996, but he contributed to the school through various committees and consulting activities in addition to his generous financial contributions. During his career, Dr. Rabinovich was active in more than ten professional associations and published dozens of articles and abstracts. With his wife, Nelly, he raised four children, who all have entered health care-related fields. Despite his busy

Hospital Information

Exercise rooms Exercise rooms are available for residents and fellows at both hospitals. The Springfield Memorial exercise room is located on the 8th floor. The HSHS St. John's exercise room is located on the 12th floor. Trainees are also permitted to utilize the HSHS/Prairie Heart Institute’s Cardiac Rehab exercise room during hours when patients are not utilizing the facility. Residents/Fellows interested in utilizing the facility must attend an initial 5-10 minutes orientation at the facility. Orientation is held every Thursday at 4:00pm, no appointment needed, residents/fellows can attend

The residency program in Springfield is affiliated with two large community hospitals: Memorial Health and St John’s Hospital. Their patient populations are well-balanced, diverse and are drawn from Springfield and a large 30 county referral area. With a combined total of over 1,200 beds, both Memorial and St Johns are acute care centers with active Emergency Departments and Outpatient departments. Both are designed Trauma Centers for central and southern Illinois. Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is in the center of Springfield, only a few blocks from both Memorial and St John
