About

Standardized Patients (SPs) have been used for teaching and assessing medical students at Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine since the late 1970's. In the mid-1980's, under the direction of Dr. Howard Barrows, the use of SPs in assessment was expanded to include a 15 patient clinical practice exam (CPX) in the senior year. This examination served as part of the stimulus for the development of the SP Project at the National Board of Medical Examiners and for the Macy consortia Project in the early-mid 1990's. Welcome Since 1978, the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has educated and trained 3,233 SIU School of Medicine Alumni, has 2,306 graduates in practice with 901 (39%) practicing in 66 Illinois counties. About LSP

Training the next generation of rural physicians SIU School of Medicine launched the Lincoln Scholars Program in the summer of 2020, a new Doctor of Medicine track to amplify its mission to improve regional health in downstate Illinois. It is specifically designed to train the next generation of generalist, rural physicians. Currently, our medical students attend one year in Carbondale, and the rest of the curriculum takes place in Springfield.
