SIU has great teaching hospitals – Memorial Medical Center offering University-based state-of-the-art medicine and its ability to provide residents a great amount of hands on experience, with emphasis on evident-based medicine principles. Work Environment The SIU Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery proudly supports a positive and nurturing work environment for our residents. Our training program is comprised of both academic faculty and private practice physicians. Our residents work at two not-for-profit hospitals located only a few blocks apart. These hospitals are Memorial Health Springfield and St. Johns Hospital . Both hospitals are very supportive of our trainees. Southern Illinois University School of Medicine offers its Problem Based Learning Workshop and Standardized Patients Workshop at its Springfield campus. Virtual Problem Based Learning (PBL) Workshop The PBL workshop focuses on teaching medical educators to implement a problem-based learning curriculum. SIU has been at the forefront of PBL since its inception. The late Dr. Howard Barrows, who was instrumental in creating PBL, was in residence at SIU until his retirement.
